The Mirror - Nurse Gymger
Nurse by License - Human by Heart
My life has been unraveling, and I've made a new discovery each and every day for the past 39 years. I have probably broken the record for the world’s slowest personal evolution, and I think I will have another 39 years before I actually get there. I need to acknowledge all of the hard work and everything I put into becoming the person I am today. It has been a long road. I wish I could say there was a ton of self-love, motivation, and kindness towards myself, but unfortunately, that is not the case.. Impact, it has been the opposite. One could say that I’ve spent 39 years being mean and unkind to myself. I was not my biggest cheerleader. I was not rooting for myself. I was not in my corner.
There is no time like today to Carpe Diem or seize the day! It is essential for us not to miss the opportunity to grow! Ifound my wellness niche within the past year; however, I have been slowly building on it for several years now. Startedwith habits which evolved into the person I want to become - Thank you, James Clear! We can all grow, develop, and change. We all need to change and evolve, as it is healthy and the only way to achieve a good quality of life. As the late great Michael Jackson sang in his 1988 hit, “Man in the Mirror”:
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change
The only way to accomplish what we want or need in life is to work hard at it. I became a registered nurse in 2012, which marked the beginning of my healthcare career. I slowly continued to work on myself and built up a somewhat cumulative support system externally and, a few years later, internally. The internal support system is the necessary component that laid the foundation for my next ERA. My Wellness Era!
To celebrate my Wellness Era, I wanted to highlight my decision to start attending 9Round. In this circuit kickboxing class, you complete one station for 3 minutes and then rotate to another for a complete set of 9 rounds. When you sign up, you get discounts on the heart monitor and other health-related merchandise. There is a large TV mounted on the wall that displays your heart rate and progress throughout the class. You then receive an email with your results. You can pick a name or persona that you want to be displayed. I thought about it for a few days and wanted to come up with the perfect name. All my life, I have been referred to as a “Ginger” because of my red hair; even my husband refers to me as a“ginger”. Plus, I was on this evolution and journey towards better health, and when I include the word “gym” and the word “ginger” - GYMGER is born!
Nurse by License – Human by Heart has been my mantra, but stepping into my Wellness Era has given it a whole new meaning. For years, I carried doubt, self-criticism, and silence in the corner where I should have been cheering for myself. But now, I’ve chosen to step into the ring—not just at 9Round, but in life. Every round, every intention, every mindful choice is proof that growth is possible, even if it feels slow.
GYMGER isn’t just a name on the screen—it’s a reminder that I am rewriting the narrative, creating strength where there was once hesitation, and rooting for myself in ways I never thought I could. My story is still unfolding, but for the first time, I am walking into each new chapter with courage, compassion, and an open heart.
