The Mirror - Candy Land AKA Life

We all have played the game Candy Land as children, and as we matured in our board game-playing interests, we graduated to the game of LIFE. No, not the board game I literally mean your Life. I suggest that our entire existence is just a game of Candy Land. Think about that for a second and consider the following:

From the moment you start the game, you have 1 - 4 players and start at the same spot on board; we can call this spot the beginning. Each player takes a turn picking a random card from a "well-shuffled deck". The card has a colored symbol on the card that corresponds with a space you move to on the board- With me so far? There are also special symbols on some cards where you can do special moves on the board. For example, an ice cream cone symbol may mean you get to advance to the game's midpoint. Each player simply picks up a random card, and the first to the end of the game wins.

The fun thing about Candyland is that depending on which card you pick up and the corresponding symbol, you can move ahead or get knocked back. It all comes down to a game of luck if the cards are properly shuffled. I compare it to life because to advance forward and even win the game is all based on luck and which card is picked. Depending on how well the deck is shuffled, one could further inquire about the analogy that Candy Land represents the game of actual life.

If the deck is not shuffled well, consider it as compared to social, economic status, or one's family life to set the stage for success. Even if the deck is shuffled well, there will always be players who have an easier path as compared to others. They will get all of the lucky breaks and do well in life. It is not always fair, and there is not always foundational equity in the game, but if you work hard and play the game correctly, you can win.

Candy Land teaches us that life is not always about fairness or equality but navigating the cards we are dealt and making the most of our journey. Whether we race to the finish line or find ourselves stuck in a loop, the essence of the game and life is to keep playing, cherish the sweet moments, and learn from the setbacks. After all, it's not just about winning but about how we engage with the game and the lessons we take away.

In conclusion, the game of Candy Land serves as a poignant metaphor for life itself. Just as players begin the game at the same starting point, we all enter life with unique circumstances and opportunities. The cards we draw—representing the choices we make, the opportunities we encounter, and the challenges we face—determine our journey. Some cards propel us forward, offering moments of triumph, while others set us back, reminding us of life's unpredictability. Like the deck shuffling, life's fairness is influenced by factors beyond our control, such as socioeconomic status, family background, or systemic inequities. Yet, despite an uneven playing field, resilience, strategy, and perseverance can make a difference.
